“Gospel Dream” is the precursor to “Sunday Best”. It is a gospel/Christian talent search, reality type series that premiered on BET in 2003 and is gospel/Christian music’s answer to “American Idol”: created and executive produced by composer, producer, and director Elvin Ross – famously known for his extensive work with Tyler Perry among other industry giants.

Auditions for Gospel Dream were held in the summer of 2003 in Atlanta GA, I want to say.🤔 I’d heard about them through my church: which was and is a part of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship.

A few other “wins” from participating: a) my very FIRST plane ride! ✈️ I was PETRIFIED!! 😬😂 b) my very FIRST solo trip in a big city! c) I met Tyler Perry who entertained HUNDREDS of us in his Madea character voice while we waited in line to audition! ❤️😂 d) my THIRD plane ride to meet my BFF (Ray Maxwell) who traveled with me to Detroit! 🛩🥰 I wasn’t scared at all that time.😁 e) I auditioned before a panel of experts, INCLUDING Elvin Ross, who gave me excellent feedback!! 🥰

Now, I didn’t get the BIG prize: an opportunity to participate in the finals and compete for a management contract, a one year recording contract and a chance to work closely with top producers on my debut. Ms. Benita Washington (Jones) won that! 🏆🥇😉 BUT: I “did” finish 2nd in the Detroit region semi-finals!!! 🥈Achieving that milestone affirmed and fueled the self confidence of an awkward, shy young woman with BIG aspirations to excel in the performing arts!! It unlocked the full spectrum of my creativity; not just in singing, but in songwriting, acting and in writing plays. 🎤🎶✍🏾🎭
