Good afternoon, Friends! 👋🏾😀 Remember I said “if you’re going to tell your story, then you must begin at the beginning” and promptly began at what should have been Part II??? 😂 Well, today is most definitely THE Beginning.🌤☀️ I messed up (🤦🏾♀️), but I’ll redeem myself by calling this segment: “The Introduction”.
My Mother is the REAL Singer in my family! 🥰❤️ Anybody who knows me knows that I have never minced words about that. Growing up; I watched her rehearse and minister at so many different churches and events!! I watched her intently down to her grooming process even before I realized that it was all part and parcel of being a Singer!! I loved her wigs, her makeup, her beautiful dresses and to play in her shoes when she left home (😂🫣🤫🤭)!! I “literally” wanted to walk in her footsteps because I’d try to sing like her with my pretend microphone (hairbrush 😂) when she was out of the house. I’d put on her “Amazing Grace” (Aretha Franklin) album and imagine that I could rouse audiences just like Momma did when she sang the same songs: mimicking the “roar” of the crowds when I finished. (🤦🏾♀️🤭)
Well, I don’t know when she realized my Sister and I could sing. It had to be when I was very, very little because I don’t remember a time when we WEREN’T singing background after a certain point!! Maybe she heard us playing church (“shouting” 😂) or maybe she caught us making up song & dance routines (😊). Either way; that seed she cultivated by just taking us to church, putting us in the choir stand, taking us to her practices and allowing us to sing BGVs from an early age lit a fire in me! 🔥
I always wanted to be JUST like her ❤️ … I always LOVED her voice (and “still” have a love affair with Altos and Contraltos 💕)!! ❤️ She’s my vocal Bible. My sHERO. #TheEvolutionOf #KLesure begins with my Mother 💞 and days of singing with my first Best Friend, my younger Sister.❣️About 5-6 years ago, we recaptured a moment in time for Granny’s birthday party … “He’s Calling Me”!! Enjoy! 🙂
